internet universeWith the extreme popularity of the iPhone, and of smart phones in general, many people already have the possibility to be online on a 24/7 basis. Whether it is surfing the internet, Facebook, or checking e-mails, if you have a flat rate data plan with your mobile phone provider, you will likely only pay a fix amount per month.

This being said, the internet makes classical calls and SMS, which often cost additional money, redundant. Here, we would like to suggest three apps, which are available for the iPhone and Android, which allows you to text and call people using an internet connection. If you decide to use these facilities, be sure that you have a corresponding data plan with your provider. Of course, you can also use WiFi as an alternative.

Skype

Originally available for the computer, Skype has now gone mobile. Skype is a piece of software, enabling users to send text messages, to call each other using VoIP, and to engage in video chats. Both users need to be registered with Skype in order to be able to use it. With Skype, you can immediately see who is online, and contact that person. A unique feature of Skype is, that you can charge your account using your credit card, and you can use your Skype account to call people on their phones, all over the world. The pricing is usually very competitive.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is an application, specifically designed for text messaging. Due to the simplicity of WhatsApp, the app is very fast, and the data transmitted is little. WhatsApp is ideal for sending quick, short messages. As with Skype, both users have to be registered with WhatsApp in order to use it. Additionally, WhatsApp offers the possibility to create groups, so you can have conversations in a group of 3, 4, or more people.

Line

Not as well known as WhatsApp, but especially popular in Asia, is Line. Line is similar to WhatsApp, but additionally it also offers the possibility to call another user using VoIP. Video chats are not possible with Line. Line is also quite fast, and one of the cool features of Line is its choice of emoticons, and how they are displayed.

Conclusion

With the right app, it is very well possible today to circumvent traditional texting and calling people. By using the internet, and with the right data plan, calling someone long distance becomes easy, and incredibly cheap.
